Fairy lamps, a valuable treasure if you own an original

Back in the Victorian era, people used lamps and candles to light the rooms in the homes and castles.  Small glass candle holders were made and it soon became known as Fairy lamps.  They were most often used to light hallways and nurseries at night and were actually the first night lights.  Today, these remarkable antiques are highly sought after.

Because the Fairy lamp was so beautiful, manufacturers started making them more for decoration than for actual lighting purposes.  Styles were designed for dining table lamps as well as chandeliers.  They were made out of simple colored glass but there were able to add warm and elegance to any room.

The original Clarke Fairy lamps were quite small ranging in size of between 4 and 6 inches in height.  Most were made with either 2 or 3 pieces of glass which included a base, the candle cup and the glass shade which acted like a modern lamp shade.  These antiques can fetch a price anywhere between $300 and $1,000 depending on the condition of the lamp.
